UFC 109 – Geezers at Caesars

Author: Junior

Saturday night MMA fans will have the chance to watch two current UFC hall of famers duke it out in the octagon for the first time in the sports history with UFC 109 in Las Vegas, Nevada (at Mandalay Bay, not Caesars). Randy Couture and Mark Coleman, who make up 1/3rd of the fighters on the UFC’s exclusive Hall of Fame list, will finally lock horns after a combined 53 professional MMA bouts and 91 years of life experience. No, you didn’t misread that, Couture and Coleman are 46 and 45 respectively, making the duo the oldest pair of fighters to compete inside the cage.

Couture has a collegiate wrestling pedigree and has held the championship belt in both the 205 lb. and heavyweight divisions while competing in the UFC. The hall-of-famer and 5-time champ is considered to be a pioneer of the sport and has seemed to of outrun father time at 46-years-old.

The Hammer is an ex-Buckeye wrestler and an overall bad mother fucker. He’s been the UFC Heavyweight Champion, won the PRIDE 2000 Openweight GP Final and has competed against the likes of Mauricio Rua, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, and one of the greatest martial artists in history… Fedor.

Check out the story of Brazilian bad ass Paulo Thiago and a few other UFC stars after the jump…

Rest of the pack:

* In the co-main event of the evening Nate “The Great” Marquardt will face gritty veteran Chael Sonnen for the next shot at middleweight gold, currently held by king-pin Anderson “Spider” Silva. Marquardt will be battling for a rematch against the champ while Sonnen is competing to get his first ever shot at the belt.

* Mike “Quick” Swick makes his return to the octagon following his second UFC loss in 11 attempts. He faces Brazilian action hero Paulo Thiago, who fights in a cage for fun when he’s not making drug busts and shooting really cool slow motion helicopter sequences.

* Apparently not significant enough for UFC Countdown hype, ex-Welterweight champion Matt “The Terror” Serra will face off against Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg. The two have exchanged in a playful war of words, with Trigg calling Serra an angry midget, and Serra pointing out that Trigg paints his toe nails and has a tramp stamp. I can’t guarantee that the fight will be as entertaining as the press conference, but with both fighter’s backs against the wall it ought to be a doozy.
