It’s the fight credited for turning MMA from a freak-show pay-per-view attraction to a viable sport. In the season finale of The Ultimate Fighter: Season 1 (a show currently entering it’s 11th term) future 205 lb. champ Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar would clash inside the octagon for a chance to become the ultimate fighter and earn a coveted six-figure contract. Legend has it the opening minutes of the fight were so exciting that the TV ratings rocketed from 1.6 million viewers at the opening bell to 10 million viewers by the time judges had rendered a unanimous decision in the favor of Griffin.
The fight was so entertaining that it has it’s own Wikipedia page, sparing me the heavy lifting:
Aftermath
The UFC also awarded Stephan Bonnar a contract due to his performance in the ring. In the months following the fight, Griffin and Bonnar would often be mentioned alongside one another. At the finale of TUF 2, for example, Dana White said of the Welterweight finals, “…in my opinion, ladies and gentlemen, that was Stephan Bonnar and Forrest Griffin, only on the ground.”
Spike TV hosted a segment on their website entitled “He Said / He Said,” featuring both Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar. The two fighters voiced their opinions and analysis of the The Ultimate Fighter 2 on an episode-by-episode basis. The feature continued for the next two seasons. Following UFC 62, the “He Said / He Said” feature has not aired.
UFC 62: The rematch
The rematch took place at UFC 62 on August 26, 2006…
All three ringside judges scored the match 30-27 for Forrest Griffin.[9]
Drug testing
After UFC 62, Bonnar tested positive for the banned substance Boldenone, a type of anabolic steroid. The commission issued a 9-month suspension on Bonnar’s fighter’s license and fined him $5,000.[10] Spike TV released Bonnar from his duties as a broadcaster on SpikeTV.com; the popular “He Said / He Said” segment disappeared from the website. UFC President Dana White voiced his support of the commission’s investigation while remaining empathetic to Bonnar’s cause.
When a fight leads to two fighter contracts being given out, an inevitably less-entertaining sequel and alleged steroid abuse you know it has to be a MMA classic.

Fedor remains the class fighter in mixed martial arts. His toolbox makes him the best all time heavyweight fighter in mma, bar none. The Last Emperor remains the most vicious practitioner in the history of mixed martial arts. He should never sign with the UFC to cement his legacy.
Good read. A good quick read.
Thanks for the awesome post!
