If you're a sports fan who's still on the fence when it comes to mixed martial arts, then I have a fighter who just might change your mind... Don Frye.

If you’re still on the fence when it comes to mixed martial arts, then this is a fighter who just might change your mind…

“Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound” - Don Frye (taken from the Official Don Frye Website)

Aside from having the manliest name ever and looking more like Magnum PI than Tom Selleck, Don Frye is a true MMA legend. Frye began his fighting career as a freshman wrestler at Arizona State where he trained with assistant wrestling coach, and UFC legend, Dan “The Beast” Severn. Severn’s influence on Frye wasn’t just on the mat, he also influenced the grown-ass man mustache that Frye still rocks to this day (Frye had a full mustache as a freshman at ASU).

After a stint in the Olympics and one year at Arizona State, Frye transferred to Oklahoma State where he became teammates with another hall of fame UFC fighter, Randy “The Natural” Couture.

After college, Frye became a full-time professional MMA fighter. In 1996 he entered UFC 8 with Severn as his coach. Fighting three times in one night, Frye pummeled all of his opponents in just over three minutes total, winning the tournament with ease. At UFC 8, Frye set the record for fastest KO in the UFC at just 8 seconds.

After several appearances in the UFC, Frye fought in several other organizations including Pride FC, K-1 and the IFL. In one of the most memorable fights in MMA history, Frye battled Yoshihiro Takayama in Pride 21. Frye was was well into his 40′s and Yoshihiro was the much bigger man, standing 6’5″ and weighing 253 lbs. But age and size did not deter Frye from exchanging blows with Takayama in what is arguabley the most exciting single round in MMA history (click here to see the video).

Frye announced his retirement just this month, saying that he was tired of the promoters and time it took away from his family life. Frye ended his career with a respectable 20-10 record. He is now an actor and spends quality time with his wife and two daughters. If you ever meet a girl with the last name Frye I would suggest not trying to get in her pants because you might have Don Frye knocking on your door.

There will never be another Don Frye, and that’s okay with me because Don Frye’s only come around once every 2,000 years. I’m just glad I was around to see him.

Twenty years ago this week, “Iron” Mike Tyson fought James “Buster” Douglas at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan. Tyson was a 42-1 favorite to win the fight and nobody thought Douglas even had a chance of making it 2 rounds.

With six seconds remaining in the 8th round, Tyson was able to floor Douglas with a right uppercut. However, Douglas was able to get to his feet at the count of nine and the round ended. In the 10th, Douglas dropped Tyson with a devastating five-punch combination. Referee Meyran reached the ten count, with a dazed Tyson, on his hands and knees, groping for his mouthpiece, the image is timeless.

The victory catapulted Douglas into the stratosphere of fame and fortune but he flamed out just as fast as he burst onto the scene. Douglas made his only defense of the heavyweight title on October 25, 1990, against Evander Holyfield. Douglas came in the fight heavy, at 241 lbs (over 15 pounds heavier than in his fight against Tyson). In the third round, Douglas loaded up with a right uppercut that Holyfield easily countered with a straight right that knocked Douglas down and out for the full count. Douglas decided to retire after the fight.

Buster Douglas might have been a flash in the pan, but he’s a flash in the pan I will ever forget.

Tonight at 9 p.m ET Versus will be broadcasting WEC: 44 live from the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Featherweight champion of the world Mike Brown (22-4, 4-0 WEC) will attempt to defend his strap for the third time in the main event of the evening against Brazilian knockout artist Jose Aldo (15-1, 5-0 WEC).

Aldo has been on a murderous tear of late. He’s defeated each of his last five WEC opponents by TKO, including his last outing which ended with a flying knee and strikes 8 seconds into the fight. He is a Brazilian jujitsu black belt but has said (and proven) that his punches and kicks are his greatest threats. As impressive as Aldo has been he’s never had to compete with a beast the likes of the champ.

Brown has ridden his 10 fight win streak straight to the top, becoming the number one 145 lb fighter in the world, and being recently ranked as high as fifth on ESPN’s pound-for-pound list. He’s beaten fan favorite Uriah Faber twice in the streak, once to obtain the belt and once to defend it. His other title defense comes against Leonard “Bad Boy” Garcia, whom will be fighting on the main card tonight as well.

If you’re not familiar, the WEC is a fight promotion owned by Zuffa, the sports promotion company run by UFC president Dana White and UFC owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta. Basically the WEC is the UFC for small fighters, the same dudes in suits run the organization and they feature the very best fighters in the world in their respective weight categories.

The little dudes in the WEC have been known to bring it, with their higher endurance the fights never suffer technically and they’re always entertaining. Be sure to flip over to Versus tonight during the fights and check out Genghis Con’s hype up video for the championship bout after the jump.
