We at the Bore are huge fans of lacrosse, though we haven’t been able to cover the sport we love since throwing Maryland stud Max Schmidt on our “Top 5 Moustaches in Sports” list. Unfortunately, today’s story comes on the heels of a horrifying charge reminiscent of the 2006 Duke rape scandal.
Virginia lacrosse player George Huguely has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of women’s lacrosse player and fellow UVA senior, Yeardley Love. The two were reportedly in a relationship.
Police received a call from Love’s roommates around 2:15 am concerning an alcohol overdose. According to Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo, officers arrived to find obvious physical trauma, “It was quickly apparent to them that this young lady was the victim of something far worse.”
In an interview in 2006 Huguely had this to say of the Duke Blue Devils’ rape scandal:
“I sympathize for the team. They’ve been scrutinized so hard and no one knows what has happened yet. In this country, you’re supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. I think that’s the way it should be.”
For now Huguely is being held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. He will have the chance going forward to prove his innocence, just as the Blue Devils were able to do, though as things stand Huguely’s future seems bleak. We’ll keep you posted as findings are released. Our hearts go out to the Love family and all others involved.
We promise to bring more cheerful news from the lacrosse world soon as the NCAA Tournament is just around the corner!

After it seemed as if NCAA lacrosse had finally gotten past the Duke incident now another off-the-field issue is going to cast a terrible light upon the game, one that NCAA lacrosse might take years to recover from.
Sincerely,
My condolences to love ones on both sides of this issue.

Thanks for the rare instance of class, FYH.
I agree with ya brotha! Lets hope the NBA playoffs are scintillating and more of Tiger’s whores come out of the woodwork in the following weeks so that ESPN doesn’t grab hold of this thing and run with it…
I’ve got a bad feeling we’re gonna have to hear about this all throughout tourney time though. It would really be a shame, lax is a great sport!
its just unfortunate for lacrosse. although it is the fastest growing high school and college sport in america, not enough of the “good lacrosse things” are presented in the media. its only the “bad lacrosse things” that get attention. think about it, we hear stories all the time about football players killing, using drugs, getting arrested for weapons, yet we dont say necessarily assume all football players are rapists/murderers. A lot of the bad things in football (or other sports) are kind of drowned out to a point by all the good things that players do and those things are expressed by the media, but they arent for lacrosse, thus all you hear are the negative things, which does, unfortunately put lacrosse in the negative spotlight.
looks like both the mens and womens teams decided to continue with there seasons
