(Former USC safety, Taylor Mays, ran a 4.43 40-yard dash at the Combine)
The NFL Combine is the ultimate meat market. The best players in college football all congregate in Indianapolis each year to be tested, poked and prodded in front of NFL scouts and GM’s.
For all of you Monday Morning Quarterbacks and Turkey Day All-Americans, the NFL Combine is an annual reminder that you would have never been good enough to play in the NFL. I’m sure you were a stud in high school, maybe even all conference and a letter winner at a D-III school, but you were not NFL material.
Want proof?
Have you ever heard of Jamar Chaney? No you haven’t. Chaney ran a 4.54 40-yard dash, benched 225 lbs. 26 times and recorded a 39 inch vertical. Oh, I forgot to mention that Jamar is a 6’1″ 242 lb. linebacker out of Mississippi State who is projected to be picked in the 6th Round of the draft.
Not impressed by Chaney?
Then how about USC safety Taylor Mays (pictured above). Mays is a 6’3″ 230 lb. safety who ran a 4.43 40-yard dash and benched 225 lbs 24 times. He’s a safety.
Still not convinced?
Clemson wide receiver Jacoby Ford ran a 4.28 40-yard dash. If you raced Jacoby in a 40 he would beat you by 15 yards even if he was running in jeans and a pair of Timberland’s.
Look, I’m not trying to make you feel bad about your backyard football prowess, but don’t think for one second that you would have ever made it to the NFL. Unless of course, you were a kicker.
