Last time you heard from Chael Sonnen he was talking about sending Anderson Silva a document requesting that the champ erect a statue in Sonnen’s likeness in his living room. Well, things have gotten weirder. Sonnen was spending time with Pro MMA Radio when he dropped this gem (full interview can be found in archives here):
“When you screw up, you have to own it. That stuff really gets under my skin. Take Lance Armstrong. Lance Armstrong did a number of things and he gave himself cancer. He cheated, he did drugs, and he gave himself cancer. Well, instead of saying ‘Hey listen, I cheated and gave myself cancer, don’t be like me.’ He actually made himself the victim and then went out and profited something like $15 million dollars from this ‘Hey, poor me, let’s find a cure for cancer’ campaign instead of just coming clean and saying, ‘Look, here’s what I did, I screwed myself up, and I hope people learn from my mistakes.’ You just watch these guys and can’t help but think, God, what a fraud.”
Just glad we aren’t the only ones drinking the Haterade. Though it’s a popular theory and I’m typically smitten by Sonnen’s verbal nonsense, I can’t see his angle here. But at least he’s proving crazy enough to go after the Spider this Saturday, something the past few contenders weren’t so keen on.
Chael is right… Lance took illegal performance enhancing drugs and the reason they are illegal is because they are dangerous. One of the potential negative side effects of PED’s is cancer, which is why Congress is on the case because they’re trying to save kids who are influenced by these sports “heroes.” It’s no different if someone smokes a pack of cigarettes a day and gets lung cancer. If you inject foreign substances into your body you may get sick.
Chael is right… Lance Armstrong is a complete fraud.
