In a statement sent to the Associated Press today, Mark McGwire admitted to the use of steroids, covering the issue extensively.

On frequency of usage, record breaking season:

“I remember trying steroids very briefly in the 1989/1990 offseason and then after I was injured in 1993, I used steroids again… I used them on occasion throughout the ’90s, including during the 1998 season.”

Reason for use:

“During the mid-’90s, I went on the DL seven times and missed 228 games over five years,.  I experienced a lot of injuries, including a ribcage strain, a torn left heel muscle, a stress fracture of the left heel, and a torn right heel muscle. It was definitely a miserable bunch of years, and I told myself that steroids could help me recover faster. I thought they would help me heal and prevent injuries, too.”

On his remorse:

“I wish I had never touched steroids.  It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era.”

To be honest Mark, ho hum.  Of course you used steroids.  It’s not like that whole “I’m not here to talk about the past” thing you were dishing out at the Congressional hearing really cleared your name.  This proves a couple things.  First, steroids work.  They make you bigger, faster and stronger.  Second, if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and takes those little nasty turds that ducks take, it’s probably a fucking duck.  There’s no longer any doubt that steroids were running rampant throughout the MLB in the 1990′s.

What’s my take you ask?  Fine.  I think the 90′s were the best damn years in baseball.  If it weren’t for McGwire and Sammy Sosa’s homerun race the sport wouldn’t have been re-energized like it was.  Steroids didn’t just bulk up muscles, they bulked up stats, attendance and revenue.

We could solve this whole issue by simply legalizing steroids in sports, imagine the freak-show entertainment…
