Nobody outside Lawrence, KS knows what "Rock Chalk, Jayhawk" means, but one thing we do know is that Kansas has an awesome basketball program. The other thing every common sports fan knows about Kansas is that their head football coach is a huge fat-ass who looks like a cartoon-porn character.
Recently that cartoon-looking, fat-ass coach, Mark Mangino, has been blasted in the media for mistreating former and current players. Mangino admits he's a disciplinarian but believes the negative attention is due to their 5-5 record this season, including 5 losses in a row. The truth is probably somewhere in between but you be the judge…
Former Kansas wide receiver Raymond Brown, a senior last season, said Mangino would often "say personal, hurtful, embarrassing things in front of people." Brown cited two examples. He said that once, his younger brother had been shot in the arm in St. Louis. Then during a game, "I dropped a pass and Coach was mad," Brown said. "And I said, 'Yes, sir. Yes, sir.' The yelling didn't bother me. But then he said, 'Shut up!' He said, 'If you don't shut up, I'm going to send you back to St. Louis so you can get shot with your homies.' I was irate. I wanted to hurt him to be honest with you."
Brown said another teammate had confided in the team that his father was an alcoholic and the player dreamed of becoming a lawyer. "One day, Coach said in front of the entire team, 'Are you going to be a lawyer or do you want to become an alcoholic like your Dad?' " Brown said. "He'd say, 'This is Kansas, you're not back home,' " Crawford said. "He'd say, 'You're not back with your homies. If you're not careful you'll be watching the game in the stands with your homies. You'll be back in that neighborhood.' "
So at this point this article can go one of two ways. Either coach Mangino is wrong and should be fired or his players are too soft and need to sack-up. We weren't there, so we won't pick a side, but one thing is clear… Kansas University Football is a joke.
Why would any high school standout want to play college ball for a fat-ass, cartoon-porn-character-looking coach at a basketball school? What's the appeal in that? How can this guy ever recruit again? Every "homie" in the country they try to recruit is going to think to themselves, "Well, it is a scholarship. But are free education and a ticket out of the ghetto really worth it? What if coach Mangino comes to visit us and eats all of my mom's cookies? What if he eats my baby sister? Maybe I should just join the Navy after all?"
Whether Mangino was right or wrong two things are certain. One, recruiting from this point on is going to be nearly impossible. And two, they play Texas in Austin this week and that's not going to help help fat-boy's diet.
