This past weekend the Iowa Hawkeyes were beaten by the Northwestern Kittens, thus shattering their hopes for a BCS title game. But don’t fear Hawkeyes fans, there’s still hope for a BCS match-up. All Iowa has to do is travel to Ohio State (Der Fuhrer’s favorite team), play in front of a 100,000+ hostile fans, ride to a “W” on the unproven arm of backup quarterback James Vandenberg, and they’ll be smelling roses!

Vandenberg seized the job last weekend when starting quarterback, Ricky Stanzi, left the game with an ankle injury in the first quarter. Despite obtaining the starting quarterback role, Vandenberg isn’t receiving any celebrity, not even in Hawkeye country (which is probably a good thing). Vandenberg spoke to the Cedar Rapids Gazette and recounted a conversation he overheard at a Bass Pro Shop hours after Iowa’s loss to Northwestern:

“So I was up in Bass Pro Shop trying some waders on, some hunting waders. The [salesman] was like, ‘Did you go to the [Iowa] game today?’ I was like, ‘Yeah,’” Vandenberg said. “And he said, ‘Did it look as rough in person as it did on TV?’ And I said, ‘You have no idea.’”

While the shattered dream of an entire demographic is still fresh in the minds of Iowa fans he should probably be thankful he can go unrecognized around campus. If he pulls off a win in the shoe this Saturday (ABC, 3:30 p.m. ET) he’ll have no need to go incognito. However for now, Vandenberg can just be grateful the salesman didn’t talk about how he’d like to burn a bag of poop on the front porch of the kid that led Iowa to one of their biggest loses in school history.
