I don't know whether Bernie Kosar was drunk during the filming of "The U" or if he's just retarded, but it's gotta be one of the two. Kosar's on-camera performance reminded me of a combination Thornton Melon (Rodney Dangerfield's character from "Back to School") and Bobcat Goldthwait, in his cocaine prime. Maybe best described as quirky and restless… with a touch of speech impediment.
Kosar made what could have been a great documentary, mediocre. I wish they had found time with Ray Lewis or Vinny Testaverde because they would have been much better representatives of "The U." Director, Billy Corben, was trying to portray "The U" as a hard, no-nonsense program and yet he let some goofy, side-armed, white-boy from Youngstown, Ohio comment about the "swagger" that defined Miami football in the 1980's. What the hell does that guy know about swagger? I bet he can't even define the word!
Whatever caused his performance, or lack thereof, in this documentary, we just hope Bernie has someone driving him around and tucking him in at night because he's some sort of fucked up.
