It didn’t take a crystal ball to guess the UConn ladies basketball team was going to capture the NCAA championship. Geno Auriemma and the Huskie squad extended their winning streak to 78 (39-0 this season) and won their second consecutive NCAA championship yesterday against Stanford 53-47.
Okay, time to poop on their parade… All this proves to me is that Geno Auriemma, a man, is without a doubt the best coach in women’s college basketball. In the end though my beef’s got nothing to do with the sex or skill of the athletes and coaches but instead the competitive landscape of women’s basketball, or lack there of. There’s nothing entertaining about watching a game where the conclusion is never in question, and considering last night was the first time a team got within ten points of the Huskies this season we know there were no classic buzzer beaters, no down to the wire finishes and plenty of bench play in the second half.
None the less congrats to UConn and Geno Auriemma on winning their second national championship in a row!
