On Friday night, the BCS busting Broncos of Boise State shot themselves in the foot against Nevada. Actually, they may have shot their kicker in the foot before they had him attempt those last two field goals. For anyone who didn’t see, in a tied game with two seconds left, Boise kicker Kyle Brotzman missed a field goal attempt from the 10 yard line. Then in overtime, the same dope missed a game tying effort from the 8 yard line. Both times Boise was lined up exactly in the middle of the field. These misses were so incredible that it made us at the Bore believe that something else was at play here…

Conspiracy Theory #1: He actually DID make the first field goal.

I’ve watched the attempt multiple times now, and it looks to me like it actually might have gone between the uprights. At least it was very close right? When you look at the other angles of the kick… Oh wait, I still haven’t seen the kick from another angle. On a football field with dozens of cameras, and at least 3 different angles on every replay I ever see, why does ESPN only show the one from straight behind the goal posts? The attempt in overtime was a miss. I know that because I saw it from two angles, proving that it was missed.

So why would they call a made FG “No Good”? Because this was BCS and ESPN’s last chance out. Boise played TCU in a BCS bowl game last year. No one respected this game, and really, no one watched. If this were to happen again, millions of dollars would be lost for both parties. People have been whacked in the mob for far less. Tim Donaghy (the NBA ref) shaved points in meaningless games. Who knows how far up this might go.

Conspiracy Theory #2: The kicker was paid off

Seriously, both of these kicks were basically extra points. Middle of the field, 10 yard line, two attempts. Either someone paid him off or he is literally the most un-clutch athlete in sports. He fell apart worse than Greg Oden’s knees…and just like Oden, Boise’s season is OVER.

Whether or not he was actually paid off or had a total meltdown, I know that he is someone I would not want to be on a sinking boat with. He would either take the only lifeboat all for himself, or panic so badly that he would drown himself and bring you down with him. One way or another, you’re screwed.

Conspiracy Theory #3: Gordon Gee got to him

Earlier last week the Ohio State president (the University, not the actual state) called out Boise and TCU saying that they weren’t worthy of playing for the BCS title. Am I the only one who wonders why this was such big news? A lot of people have made that same argument… why take it seriously when a nerd who looks like he isn’t even manly enough to watch football highlights on TV makes the same lame argument? Perhaps ESPN saw an ugly, old, white, dork with glasses talking about football and thought it was John Clayton. Otherwise I can’t figure it out.

Heck, maybe it was Gordon Gee who paid of the kicker. He has the money to pull it off. Either way, in an interesting twist, Ohio State may now have to play TCU. Gee could end up looking pretty stupid in a few weeks if that is how it works out. Ugly and stupid isn’t a good look for anyone.

What ever happened to fundamentals? We all know WR’s are the biggest prima donnas in sports, but at least they used carry the ball into the endzone before doing a touchdown dance. In last weeks’ college football action we saw two wideouts “DeShawn Jackson” their way to scores. First it was ND’s T.J. Jones, who fumbled the ball into the endzone and out of bounds. This should have taken six off the board and given the ball to Michigan at the 20 but fortunately for golden-domer faithful the zebra missed it. Then Marshall’s Aaron Dobson ran 96 yards just to drop the ball 1 inch short of the goal-line. Check it out after the jump.

Maurice Clarett is out of prison and headed to the UFL, so long as the judge allows it of course. He signed a one-year contract with the Omaha Nighthawks Monday after receiving the green light from UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue. Clarett has spent the last eight years off the field dealing with NCAA suspensions, a botched court case against the NFL, roster cut from the Broncos and a 3 1/2 year prison sentence for armed robbery. So basically the Nighthawks are hoping this whole playing football thing is just like riding a bike, and that he won’t go all Gilbert Arenas on them.

Nighthawks’ GM Rick Mueller had reason to be optimistic of Clarett’s skills after a private workout Sunday:

“The things you can’t coach you can see were there — footwork, hands, those types of things. And he’s in really good physical condition. Those were the things that jumped out more than anything else. He’s done a pretty good job getting himself in condition to play football.”

That’s right son, the prison workout does the body good. He’d probably be MVP of the FFL if he cared to join. You may remember Maurice’s last competitive football days (you’d have to have a pretty damn good memory) as a freshman at Ohio State. It took just one fall and winter quarter on campus for Mo to lead the Buckeyes to a National Championship and rush for 1,237 yards and 18 touchdowns despite missing games to injury. Then he spent spring quarter smoking pot and realizing that school was for chumps.

What’s most incredible is that those glory days were in 2002, but eight years and a respectable stretch in the pin later he’s still only 26 years old. Wasn’t Chris Winkie 34 with grand children when he won his Heisman? Maybe Winkie isn’t the best example of a successful pro career but 26 is is the new 18. I hope Maurice torches it on the field, but who knows if he’ll even get touches with four-time Pro Bowler Ahman Green on the roster. All I’m certain of is the UFL’s given me a reason to watch this season… if they can find a channel to broadcast on.

Disgraced ex-Duck Jeremiah Masoli has found a new home in Mississippi. After being embarrassed by Jim Tressel’s Buckeyes in January, the gun-slinger took to a life of crime, robbing frat houses of their guitars and Mac Books. Subsequently, Ducks coach Chip Kelly – whom famously refunded a fans travel expenses after the embarrassing LeGarrette Blount incident – suspended Masoli for the 2010 season and eventually dismissed him from the squad in June after running into more (…fun) legal problems.

The Heisman hopeful was without a team until Sunday when he announced on his website that he’d be a Rebel. He also explained he’ll be joining the parks and recreation management program having already earned his bachelor’s degree at Oregon. Yeah, figured he was into horticulture. The move allows Masoli to be eligible for this season, which is just months away (thank God).

I for one think this kid is going to be comeback story of the year. He’s made some questionable decisions but there’s a picture of he and his grandma on the front page of his website. How can we root against that?

Damon Evans has resigned from his post as University of Georgia Athletic Director, citing hypocrisy (see above) and possible future golf club assaults from his wife as primary causes. Evans was pulled over late last Wednesday in Atlanta for failure to maintain a lane, which eventually led to a DUI charge for Mr. Evans and a “disorderly conduct” charge for the 20-something year old chick riding shotgun, and nope, it wasn’t Mrs. Evans (he’s a married father of two).

To make matters worse police reports indicate that Evans attempted to use his position at the university to avoid any possible legal implications, pleading with arresting officer M. Cabe:

“I am not trying to bribe you, but is there anything you can do without arresting me?”

Wait, isn’t that exactly what a bribe is? Officer Cabe also explained that Evans asked to be taken to a motel instead of jail or to be let off with a warning. My favorite revelation, however, is that he was found with a “red pair of lady’s panties between his legs” when the officer arrived to his window, to which he explained, “She took them off and I held them because I was just trying to get her home.” Yeah, get her home and bang her. I’ve got a feeling Evans is going to be jobless and single here shortly…

Best of luck to Damon and his family in this tough time. Too bad Officer Cabe wasn’t a Bulldogs’ fan!

Nebraska Joins the Big Ten, and the First Domino Falls.

Today’s news that Nebraska will indeed leave the Big 12 and join the Big Ten might only seem like a minor change in the college football landscape, but trust us at the Bore, this is a huge deal. Nebraska leaving the Big 12 will literally mark the end of the Big 12. Containing teams that are in primarily small market Midwest towns, the Big 12 produced little TV revenue; something that giants like the Big Ten and SEC had no problem generating with their large TV deals.

When whispers of the Big Ten expanding were heard months ago many teams were tossed around to receive the special invitation into the most powerful conference in sports. Through all the conjecture, two names seemed to stick, Nebraska and Missouri; Nebraska for its fan base and Missouri for its two large markets (St. Louis and Kansas City). When it became apparent whom the Big Ten was targeting, the other Big 12 teams began frantically searching for a new conference to join. We heard numerous scenarios throughout this mad scramble. Texas and Oklahoma going to the SEC, the Big 12 trying to acquire two Mountain West teams, and finally, 6 of the Big 12’s remaining teams, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Colorado moving to the Pac 10 to create college football’s first super conference.

Hours after Nebraska officially made the move to the Big Ten yesterday, it became apparent that Missouri would follow suit and join as well (this makes 13 teams in the Big Ten. Who will be the 14th?….coming later). The next news concerning the Big 12 came from the 6 teams thinking about going to the Pac 10. Though nothing official was set between the 6 Big 12 teams and the Pac 10, it appears now that this deal is all but done and the first 16 team conference in college football will be created. With this new alignment, currently 4 teams are left ‘conferenceless’; Kansas, Kansas St., Iowa St. and Baylor. Here at the Bore we think more ‘super’ conferences are to come and this will eventually lead to every fans dream, a playoff… One thing we know for sure, College Football will be dramatically different in 2012.

The New College Football Conference Alignments Coming Soon!

Updated: The St Louis Rams selected Bradford as the number one pick and Denver took Tebow 25th while Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy remain on the board for tonight’s action. Round two of the draft sets off at 6:30 pm ET on ESPN! Where the Buckeyes at?

Be sure to flip to ESPN tonight at 7:30 pm ET to see whom your favorite NFL squad chooses to fill an essential gap or possibly rebuild around – or if you’re a Browns fan, see whose career your franchise is about to destroy.

The Tebow camp has wisely decided not to make the trip to New York, avoiding the possible Aaron Rodgers/Brady Quinn scenario as tonight will feature the first round selections only, a group few believe Timbo will join. Then again, anything’s possible. Rounds two and three will air tomorrow at 6:30 pm ET and the final four will take place Saturday starting at 10:00 am ET, all on ESPN family of networks.

Ten years from now who are we going to say was the greatest success coming out of the 2010 draft? Who will be the biggest bust? Let the speculation begin in the comments section below!

Last Thursday the NCAA's playing rules oversight panel continued to water-down the sport of football with three new rule changes, two of which have nothing to do with the play between whistles.

Last Thursday the NCAA’s playing rules oversight panel continued to water-down the sport of football with three new rule changes, two of which have nothing to do with the play between whistles. Sensibly, they eliminated wedge blocks on kickoffs in an attempt to reduce the number of concussions. Fair enough, concussions are a hot topic and eventually some angry group of moms was gonna make an organization trying to convince us every kid that puts on a football helmet ends up wearing grown-up diapers and drooling on themselves. Maybe this keeps the barking dogs at bay for a bit. The other rules, however, are sure to have football purists pissing vinegar and writing their governors (or governator, depending on your location) .

The less controversial of the arbitrary rule changes bans players from writing on their eye black (like this d-bag). I personally never ran to my Bible to check out what verse Tim Tebow had on his face, but I also don’t see any problem with it. Nor should a guy like Reggie Bush not be allowed to express his hometown pride as he did by writing his area code, “619,” on his eye black. As long as these kids aren’t writing “I fucked your retarded sister” (FYH…) I don’t see a reason we should have the refs playing fashion police.

The rule that’s really going to piss off fans is the panels’ decision to make taunting calls a spot-foul. This means if a guy breaks open a big play and high-steps into the endzone the touchdown will be called back, the points will come off the board and they’ll have their next down 15 yards back from the spot of the “foul.” Here’s what executive director of the American Football Coaches Association, Grant Teaff, had to say in attempt to justify the change:

“I think one of the reasons it’s been looked at is that when a penalty occurs on the field, it’s normally taken from the spot. This was the only occurrence that it wasn’t taken from the spot, so they wanted to change that.”

Thanks for clearing that up Grant… I always assumed it was the “only occurrence that it wasn’t taken from the spot” because it’s the only penalty that has no effect on the outcome of the play.

What do you think about the rule changes Bore Nation? Let us know in the comments section below!
